The believing woman in the Qur’an is not a passive agent within the family structure, but rather possesses a multi-layered and dynamic identity manifested in three main dimensions: personal, familial, and social. This study, using a qualitative content analysis method with a thematic Qur’anic research approach, explores and analyzes the Qur’anic components of the character of the believing woman and their relationship with the indicators of Islamic family sustainability.
The corpus of the research consists of Qur’anic verses related to key concepts concerning the believing woman, interpreted through two authoritative exegeses: Al-Mīzān and Tafsīr al-Namūneh. A total of 107 verses from 24 surahs were extracted and categorized into 3 major dimensions (personal, familial, and social), 11 core themes, and dozens of behavioral indicators.
The findings reveal that components such as faith, piety, patience, chastity, modesty, and honesty in the personal dimension; roles of wifehood, motherhood, marital modesty, and household management in the familial dimension; and social responsibility, public dignity, and educational influence in the social dimension, constitute the foundations of a sustainable Islamic family system.
A comparative analysis with Western theories reveals deep contrasts in anthropological principles, purposefulness, and the role of women. In the Qur’anic model, family sustainability is not merely a product of emotional relationships, but a result of faith, ethics, and the spiritual identity of the believing woman.
This article, by presenting an integrated model rooted in revelatory teachings, opens new horizons for interdisciplinary studies on the Qur’an, women, and the family institution, and provides a basis for designing an Islamic–Iranian model of sustainable family.
