The issue of Naskh (abrogation) is one of the important matters in the field of Quranic sciences that has been utilized in the process of interpretation. However, the occasional reliance on this rule has created problems in understanding and interpreting Quranic verses. Among these, verse 24 of Surah An-Nisa can be pointed to, which has long been the focus of one of the most significant interpretive and jurisprudential differences between Shia and Sunni Muslims. This article, using a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach, examines the views of the two schools regarding the implication of the verse and the issue of abrogation or continuation of its ruling. The main issue is how to understand the verse’s indication of Mut’ah (temporary marriage) and the evaluation of the evidence for its abrogation or non-abrogation. Findings reveal that Shia, by citing the strong apparent meaning of the word “istimta’” (to derive pleasure, referring to Mut’ah), the interpretive recitations of the Companions, and the frequently transmitted narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), consider the verse’s indication of the legislation of Mut’ah to be clear and reject the evidence for abrogation (Quranic, narrative, and claimed consensus) by relying on jurisprudential principles. In contrast, Sunnis primarily interpret the verse as referring to permanent marriage, or, while accepting its initial indication of Mut’ah, consider its ruling to be abrogated based on other verses, prophetic narrations (despite the evident inconsistency in them), and the claimed consensus. This research concludes that the strength of Shia evidence in proving the verse’s implication and criticizing the evidence for abrogation, particularly by relying on the impossibility of abrogating the Quran by solitary reports (khabar-e vahid) and the absence of true consensus, is considerable. Considering the principle of asl al-adam al-naskh (the presumption of non-abrogation), the notion of abrogation in the interpretation of this noble Quranic verse is not likely to be correct.
