The verse on male guardianship (Qawwamiyyah) (An-Nisa/34) is presented as one of the most controversial teachings of the Quran due to its proposed solution of “striking” (darb) in confronting the crisis of nushuz (recalcitrance) within the family. Numerous writings have been produced concerning male guardianship, female nushuz, and the method of dealing with female nushuz (admonition, sleeping separately, and striking) surrounding this verse. In this article, due to the breadth of these discussions, the author, accepting the premise that “striking” means hitting, elaborates on and examines the various viewpoints presented regarding the implementation of the “striking” ruling. This includes: the temporal scope of the striking ruling, the range of severity in striking, the jurisprudential ruling on striking, the necessity of observing the sequence in implementing the three stages presented (admonition, sleeping separately, and striking), the timing of the striking ruling’s implementation, and the enforcer of the striking ruling. The author then elucidates their chosen opinion, according to which the implementation of the “striking” ruling in verse 34 of Surah An-Nisa, without being confined to a specific time or place, is carried out in a gentle manner, provided nushuz is realized and after the stages of admonition and sleeping separately. It is performed by the husband, aiming to preserve the family unit, in the form of a disciplinary guidance rather than a punitive measure. The author, in this work, first gathered information using the library method and then examined this information using a descriptive-analytical approach.
