As an innovative reformist intellectual, Mernissi seeks to revive women’s real status in society by drawing on Western and Islamic (Sunni) sources. Much of her sensitivity arises from the cultural conditions of her homeland, Morocco, and her attention is largely directed toward the historical conditions of Arab women. By analyzing the early history of Islam, she attempts to prove her interpretation of religion. In line with feminist ideas, she believes that Islam, in its essence, does not create a difference between women’s and men’s rights; however, patriarchal Arab culture has overcome Islamic teachings and has introduced laws contrary to women’s rights. This article uses a descriptive-analytic method to critique Mernissi’s views. The most important finding of the present study is that, despite her eloquent expression and her attentive concern for women’s issues, her views in some cases do not conform to the definite and non-negotiable principles of Islam. This may be due to incorrect assumptions, selective engagement with sources, gender-based prejudgment in choosing historical events, erroneous analysis and interpretation of historical occurrences, misreading of Islamic rulings, and insufficient awareness of religious foundations and frameworks.
