Among the foundational discussions of Islamic jurisprudence, women’s legal status and human dignity have always been central themes for the Holy Qur’an. This research, using an analytical-interpretive approach and drawing upon authoritative Imami commentaries, seeks to answer the question of what legal system—based on dignity and justice—the Qur’an outlines in its juristic verses concerning women. Examining the juridical verses in two domains—financial and non-financial—shows that Islamic rulings are not merely religious commands; rather, they contain deep concepts of freedom of choice, financial independence, women’s inherent dignity, and human rights. The verse on mahr (dower) presents it not only as the woman’s exclusive and proprietary right, but also as a symbol of her status and economic independence. The verse in Sūrat al-Nisā’ (Q 4:19) abolishes the pre-Islamic custom of “compulsory inheritance by women,” thereby establishing women’s freedom and agency in choosing marriage and rejecting any form of coercion or unethical appropriation of them. In the non-financial sphere, by restricting īlā’ (oath of abstention) and nullifying the legal effect of ẓihār, the Qur’an frees women from a state of “suspension” and “social confinement,” defending their existential dignity and independent identity. Alongside the emphasis on the oneness of creation, the Qur’anic rulings depict a human-centered and justice-based structure for the legal system of Islam in which all human beings possess inherent dignity and true worth is measured by piety. A re-reading of these verses through interpretation not only answers feminist doubts, but also provides a means to enhance women’s position in contemporary society.
